Your Smart Phone Are You Paying The Tax

Developing the Next Generation of Rainmakers Your Smart Phone: Are you paying the tax? I remember the day I was sitting on the rental car bus at LAX airport and all of a sudden the new Blackberry my firm had asked me and a few others to demo buzzed. I was really excited. I was able to respond to an email from one of my most important client’s lawyers while sitting on a rental car bus. What could be cooler than that? A couple of weeks later, Jill and I were eating a Sushi dinner in Dallas while Nancy was out of town playing in a golf tournament. I heard that buzz again and after I responded to the email, I received another one complimenting me for being at the office so late. I quickly learned what I had thought was the coolest thing ever had made it impossible to ever just get away. I watch now, including recently in an airport lounge, and people, including many my age, all have their smartphones out. I don’t know if they are playing Solitaire, Words with Friends or just looking at their email. Seth Godin recently wrote about this:  Paying the smart phone tax. Every lawyer should read it. Here is a quick list of the headings: Take the one minute to see what Seth Godin has written for each of those headings. Then, think about whether you are paying the smart phone tax. I practiced law for 37 years developing a national construction law practice representing some of the top highway and transportation construction contractors in the US.

What's more, you underline the activity target you are following first. In this case, it was for a horizontal situation as executive of crisis services. The work target is vital, Pearl said. You need to concisely give a general reason for the organization: who you oversaw, what number of individuals, why you were recruited, what was the everyday condition, Pearl said. You are setting up an account that you at that point fortify in the outcomes focused slugs. It's a one-two punch.Fore has been colossally satisfied with the outcomes. She got the new resume in late May and right now had four meetings constantly week in June. What most intrigued Fore about her new resume? The Areas of Excellence, she said. They took all that I had needed to state and blast! - three lines close to the top that summarized everything… And I was extremely content with the language utilized, with words like 'reinforced' and 'initiated'… The new CV is so much better.Pearl said the Areas of Excellence segment Fore likes so much assists break with increasing the page outwardly, secures some searchable catchphrases and plays on how individuals actually rea d.It resembles a paper with its association, Pearl said. At the point when you have something to lock on to while you are perusing, you will go there. The thing is that I was at first focusing on other chief of crisis positions, Fore said. Be that as it may, after the new CV, I am getting enlisted for positions two levels above executive - positions like head nursing official and CEO. It's something I've never, never observed before. It doe sn't hurt that Fore is happy to move from New Mexico to practically any warm state in the U.S., nor do her certifications, experience and tenacity.A teacher of mine once said something in a class, and I currently accept it as my own way of thinking, Fore said. A bizarre title on a superficial level, except if youve had a prospective employee meet-up from hellfire (doesnt truly matter on the off chance that you were the recipient or the supplier for this situation). Weve all had our minutes, and Ive been both the collector and the supplier of meetings from damnation (in spite of the fact that I didn't at first arrangement them that way, however who does?). Anyway, I recollect this one meeting I continued for a vocation that was at a significant organization and the job was the ideal job for me. I initially met with the individual who was the director of the job (lets call her the chief) and was then approached to meet with the two individuals I was supplanting (this ought to have been the principal cautioning sign). The following round of meetings was in another structure a mile or so away, so the supervisor gave me taxi passage and sent me out the door. The following individual I met was the more junior of the two and began by disclosing t o me that she had the activity from heck, she despised everybody in the office (counting the Manager) and would be happy to proceed onward. In the meeting this ladies gets a call from her significant other (which she, obviously, takes) and all I hear is her better half reviling in an uproarious voice on the opposite finish of the telephone (another admonition sign). I proceeded onward to my next meeting (this womans administrator) where I attempted to approve if this was actually the activity from damnation. Other than the way that this lady talked so delicately I could scarcely hear her (Im sure my breathing was stronger), she was unable to respond to my inquiries regarding the activity. Around 10 minutes into this meeting I checked the time and said Sorry, I truly need to go now. Bye. Better to slice the bad dream short than to see it to its obvious end result. Olivia: If you’re ever here in Scottsdale, definitely take a look at Second Story. It’s an awesome speakeasy. The cause I needed to have Addie on at present was often because she’s just about carried out the unthinkable. She’s given in careers and she’s now an internet house advisor, which is in real property with zero real property experience. I’m hoping, for these of you who are doubting that you don’t have experience otherwise you’re not qualified, I really wished to share her story as a result of it’s actually inspiring. Addie, I just want to know. You have been in a field where you have been already performing very well and also you were climbing and also you have been getting promotions. What made you need to leave? Addie: I obtained that query so much from lots of friends and family. I was working as a re cruiter for one more builder, fell into HR recruiting right out of school. I was doing properly. I was getting promoted. I thought, “If I’m profitable at this, I should be enthusiastic about it, right? They must go hand-and-hand.” Well, no. I began doing some self-reflection this previous year and was realizing that it wasn’t what I was passionate bout. It wasn’t what was getting me off the bed within the morning. I began pondering what am I keen about? I know you understand this, it’s a hard question to answer. It’s not straightforward. I started considering what do you do together with your free time? That’s what you’re actually passionate. I realized that I’m going to open homes. I’m checking apps, like Realtor.com and Zillow. I’m actually obsessed with shows like “Flip or Flop” on HGTV. I was like “I’m loving actual estate.” I started doing a little analysis online and I found out the way to get my actual property license. Once I made that call I started reaching out to my community and people who have been in a job that I wanted to be, or in real property. Olivia: Wait a second! Did you just say reaching out to your community? Because I’m pretty positive those of you guys listening, we all hear that you have to network. I know this is something that comes naturally to you. You just about doubled down and she or he made this occur in a matter of 1 month. I assume it was even much less. I talked to her, two weeks later you had three interviews lined up. When you say reached out to your network, who did that occur for you and how did you develop these contacts that had been so valuable? Addie: I guess the place it started was right after I made the choice to start out my real estate license. Signed up for that to carry me accountable. I made a list of other builders or re-sale realty companies that I would need to work with. I wrote them down and I stated “I’m going to reach out to all of those. I’m going to seek out somebody who works there or did work there and ask them what it’s like.” Olivia: She obtained a target listing of companies, this may sound acquainted, if some of you had read “The Career Upgrade Roadmap.” Not trying to plug the guide, but it's free this week, so positively hit the link beneath and download it. That’s precisely what you probably did and most of the people don’t take the time to get particular … Even then though, you were thinking actual property, however you weren’t precisely certain what job or if it was even possible. Did you suppose it was potential but, nonetheless? Addie: It was actually kind of a hope. I just was like “I’m gonna comply with this energy that I’m feeling right now and I’m going to pursue this finest I can.” Again, writing down the businesses and then anybody I would speak to, even if I didn’t suppose they had a connection to one of them, letting them know what my plans have been. “Here’s what I want to do, right here’s what I’m working on. I’m attempting to get into real estate.” And it just opened up, I mean, you wouldn’t be surprised, however anybody else may be stunned. “Oh, I know this individual. I know this person. You should discuss to them.” It simply waterfall-ed from there. Olivia: Were you stunned that how much that opened up alternatives, just simply having these conversations? Addie: I was blown away. People truly wish to assist you to. They want to say “Oh, I know this individual. You should discuss to them.” Or “They can help you out, they’re at this firm” It’s loopy. I was truthfully blown away. Olivia: At the purpose if you’re meeting with these people, were you asking for a job? Addie: No. I mean, I’m simply doing discovery. It’s still out of my consolation zone, however in a way that I guess made them feel comfy with answering my questions, letting me know what it’s like, or what I ought to look out for. What might be onerous about it? I was really shocked. Olivia: Wow! That’s unbelievable. What obtained you so many interviews so shortly? I suppose you had three in per week one time with builders and ultimately on paper you weren’t as certified as your competitors. What do you think lead to that? Addie: Zero qualifications. I think, actually, the networking and being persistent, following up. I was at that time able to take any angle I may to get into a company. I’d say “Hey, I just talked to Tim who works at this company and he really helpful I communicate to you.” Coming from a recruiter, I knew that I loved referrals. I figured that some other firm would love referrals. Anyway that I could work out an angle to get somebody’s name or drop a community quantity in there, I would do this. How to Stop Worrying 4 Steps to Conquer Your Fears

The most effective method to Stop Worrying 4 Steps to Conquer Your Fears What are you agonizing over this moment? An introduction you need to give, a meeting, finalizing a significant negotiation, setting up your first evening gathering, or something considerably increasingly distressing? The thing is, stressing causes significant damage. Regardless of whether this is on the grounds that you give it a second thought, you've been too occupied to even consider focusing, or it's a piece of your DNA, stressing is a channel on your vitality. What's more, when you stress, it influences the individuals around you as well. As an ace worrier, I've attempted a ton of systems â€" balancing things on the concern tree, booking 30 minutes every day to stress, informing another person regarding my difficulties. And every one of them have their place. In any case, the system that is helped me the most is one I've applied recently this year to a major task that appeared as though it was going to bite the dust. Possibly it can help you as well. My Big Worry I had consented to have an exceptional very good quality occasion in London in the interest of a companion. This was my companion's brainchild, and she had depended me to run this first-since forever form in London. With only two months to go, I had filled just a bunch of seats. That wouldn't have been so terrible with the exception of that in the US this occasion regularly had 30-40 individuals. It felt like an outlandish mountain to ascend. Everything I could consider was what was I thinking when I consented to accomplish something so testing? My companion was extremely pleasant about it. She said we could simply reschedule and pick a day later in the year. Individuals hadn't appeared to mind when they needed to reschedule that one time in the US. In any case, for me, this wasn't a choice. My notoriety was on the line. I had vowed to convey this occasion, and 5 individuals had just paid to join in. It was dependent upon me to convey an incredible encounter, which wouldn't occur except if we got the numbers up to in any event 15-16. What was I going to do? The 4-Step Solution That is the point at which my girl went ahead the scene, saying, Mother, you're squandering so much vitality stressing. It's likely going to end up being great, particularly on the off chance that you channel all that vitality into taking care of the things no doubt about it. Here's the 4-advance methodology we thought of. Stage 1 â€" Make a List of Your Worries: Take out a piece of paper. On the left side, make a rundown of the considerable number of things you're stressed over. Here, you need to be finished rundown everything that is annoying you and don't forget about anything. Ensure you clutch this rundown since you'll require it again in Step 4. For my situation, I ended up being truly adept at posting my darkest, grimmest apprehensions. It really felt great to record each imagine a scenario in which situation that burdened my conscience. As the platitude goes, daylight is the best disinfectant. Getting your feelings of trepidation out into the light lessens their control over you. Here's the way my rundown looked: Insufficient individuals to make it advantageous Individuals drop out at last Individuals don't appear We come up short on comments or do to make it beneficial for every individual It feels like too little a gathering and we're shaking around in the meeting room Individuals don't care for it and need their cash back At that point the inquiry is some solution for that enormous not insignificant rundown, which is Step 2. Stage 2 â€" Take Action on What You Can Control: Experience every thing on the rundown and search for moves you could make right presently to ensure that dread doesn't work out. Fundamentally, you're searching for what's in your control versus what's not in your control. For the things in your control, make sense of what moves you can make. At that point take them. Taking a gander at my rundown, my feelings of dread truly boiled down to two things. To begin with, having enough individuals join in. Second, ensuring whoever went to had an extraordinary encounter, which to some extent depended on having enough individuals to associate with. Having had enough involvement with running occasions, I realized I could make it an extraordinary encounter for individuals… as long as there were sufficient individuals in the room. That implied my greatest spotlight must be on getting enough bums in seats as is commonly said in the UK. My concern was that I was being a stickler about how the solicitations ought to be worded, and in this way hesitating. Subsequently, I had conveyed just 10 solicitations. So my hit rate was really half, which is very acceptable. What I expected to do was convey parcels more solicitations. This was the reminder I required. Since my dread of having a vacant room bested my dread of putting myself out there with blemished solicitations, I experienced less difficulty pressing 'send' on those messages. Furthermore, when I had done my bit, it was simpler to catch up with companions who had said they would get the message out however hadn't yet. Stage 3 â€" Make It a Daily Focus: Going ahead, get up each morning and ask yourself, What would i be able to do today to push the undertaking ahead and address the things I'm stressed over? This will incite you to continue taking activities. For my situation, it was expanding on the disclosure I made in Step 2: that while I was unable to control who said yes, I could control the quantity of solicitations I conveyed. So consistently for the following five weeks, I distinguished more individuals to welcome, sent more solicitations, and requested that companions expand solicitations also. I experienced my whole LinkedIn contact list, reconnected with previous partners and utilized corporate connections. No stone went unturned. At long last, we had 25 yesses! Coincidentally, I kept the fiasco list list from Step 1 helpful. That is the thing that gave me a kick in the rear to continue making a move and to remain centered. What's more, in the event that I recognized extra concerns, it made it simple to add them to the rundown and get the opportunity to take a shot at those as well. Stage 4 â€" Do a Post Game Review: When the wellspring of your concern is finished, regardless of whether that is an occasion, an introduction or a meeting, it's an ideal opportunity to do what I consider as a Post Game Review. Return to your unique rundown of stresses from Step 1. On the correct side of the page, record what really occurred. The fact of the matter is to look at the two records. In case you're a kindred worrier, your previously list will be bigger than your after list. This is what mine resembled: Previously After Insufficient individuals to make it advantageous Individuals drop out at last Individuals don't appear We come up short on comments or do to make it advantageous for every individual It feels like too little a gathering and we're shaking around in the meeting room Individuals don't care for it and need their cash back It went extraordinary! 21 individuals came, they adored it, and asked when the following one will occur! By doing this examination of your when records, you'll get information on how disengaged your stressing is from what really occurs. What's more, that will assist you with lightening up on the useless stressing next time, and get the opportunity to activity quicker. Why This Strategy Works The excellence of this technique is that just recording your concerns removes them from your head where they can ping around and appear to be greater than they truly are. For my situation, stresses left unattended in my mind can take on an enthusiastic quality that super-sizes them. So it's so useful to get them out where I can do see them in one rundown. At that point you can all the more soundly manage every one, and get others to assist you with traveling through the rundown, regardless of whether that is surveying how genuine the dread is or a colleague assisting with making a move. A portion of your interests will be genuine and furthermore truly addressable. That is the reason they state, an issue shared is an issue illuminated. Regardless of whether it's simply getting it out into the light where you can see it appropriately, or getting others to accomplish something that they can do however you can't or shouldn't on the grounds that others are better positioned to do it. In this way, when you end up stressing over something, make the rundown and experience it with somebody you trust to tune in and not judge. At that point center around where you can have an effect and begin taking activities. The most effective method to Stop Worrying: (1) Make a rundown (2) Take activity on what you can control (3) Keep making a move At long last, let the outcomes deal with themselves. After some time, the heaviness of the information about your concerns versus reality will begin to soak in so you can bounce rapidly into gainful mode. What Will You Do? Presently it's an ideal opportunity to step back and consider how to vanquish what you're stressing over. What's your greatest concern at this moment? Furthermore, what will you do to move your vitality from negative concern to positive activity? Leave me a remark and let me know.

3 Valuable Business Lessons I Learned As A Stripper

3 Valuable Business Lessons I Learned As A Stripper I called my folks and disclosed to them I was accepting a vocation as a stripper. I had quite recently graduated school and was eager to share the news that I had found my first employment. They were energized for me, too after they discovered that Id be keeping my garments on. The organization that Id found a vocation with was a bigger business printer, and my first employment would strip film in the pre-press division. Truly, it was a lamentable activity title, however my first occupation showed me mind boggling exercises that I despite everything use today. Throughout the following over two years as an administration learner I wound up turning through 10 unique offices in five distinct areas over the United States. Here are the main three exercises I gained from that venture: 1. The most effective method to suck at something. I came out of school thinking I knew a ton about a ton. Turns out, I was really confused! I had not figured out how to truly battle and granulate it out at something I wasnt great at. School had been generally simple for me; I could swing As and Bs absent a lot of exertion. My first employment instructed me that not all things come effectively and there were a few things that regardless of how enthusiastically I attempted, I could never be acceptable at. What's more, that was alright. It was alright as long as I didnt surrender and as long as I was giving all that I had. The experience of being extremely dreadful permits me to feel compassion when I see somebody just not getting it at something I find simple; I recollect what its like to suck! I likewise comprehend that you can take somebody incredible and squash her by placing her in an inappropriate job. We truly need to let individuals play to their qualities. 2.Not everybody needs to lead. For whatever length of time that I can recall that, I needed to lead. On the off chance that an educator requested a volunteer head, my hand was one of the first to shoot open to question. Secondary school class president? Check. So I was astounded when I solicited one from my new associates Lisa what she thought shed be doing at the organization in a couple of years and she answered, This. She proceeded to share the amount she adored what she did and the amount she cherished the organization. She didnt try to additional; she tried to be extraordinary right where she was. Stunning. I came to comprehend that there are a greater number of individuals like Lisa than like me. A great deal of people love what they would and like to remain exactly where they are. I took in my activity as a pioneer isn't simply to make more pioneers yet additionally to make a spot where individuals who need to remain set up can flourish. 3. Your image is comprised of definitely something beyond your outcomes. The organization that I worked for those initial hardly any years tossed epic gatherings. Large spending plan, free liquor, hard and fast ragers. I saw in excess of a couple of vocations demolished at those slams. An old buddy, who had been squashing it results-wise in every one of his turns, wound up stopping after incidentally demolishing an important bit of craftsmanship at one such gathering. It goes a lot farther than how you carry on at the workplace party, however. I had an extraordinary coach pull me aside and disclose to me that by addressing the straightforward inquiry Hows it going? with Ugh. Im SO bustling I dont know how Im going to complete this was NOT helping construct the brand I needed. I got a speedy exercise that you are consistently on with regards to mark building. At last your vocation is represented the moment of truth by whats said when youre not in the room, and being known as the individual who is so bustling they probably won't hit their cutoff times isn't actually what you need individuals saying about you! I figured out how to outline my demeanor and reactions through the viewpoint of what I needed individuals saying about me when I wasnt around. Im still old buddies with a center gathering of individuals from my first genuine activity out of school. I wouldnt exchange my encounters and the exercises I gained from those early days in my vocation for anything. Also, I have the special reward of getting the chance to state that I began my vocation as a stripper. - Mo is the Founder of The Moxie Exchange, a preparation and friend coaching association for organizations who need to enroll, create, advance and hold ladies and make comprehensive working environments. Alexandra Levits Water Cooler Wisdom Navigating a Personal Friendship at Work

Alexandra Levit's Water Cooler Wisdom Navigating a Personal Friendship at Work Heres another reader question from DailyWorth.com: I work in a small credit union as a temp with a close friend who has been watching me closely at the office. How do I keep work separate from social? I know she is just trying to help me become permanent, but it can be stressful.â€" Marie, New York What came first: the close friendship or the job? If the friendship came first, then it’s probably worth protecting the relationship and giving this person the benefit of the doubt. After church one day, go out by yourselves. Ask her if you can talk about something that’s bothering you, and then be honest. First, say that you really want this job to become permanent and you appreciate her help to make it happen. Next, ask if she could give you a little breathing room because working so closely with a friend makes you nervous (and you don’t want to screw up). If she says she’s concerned about mistakes you’re making, ask if she could talk to you about these outside the office. While it’s difficult to hear constructive criticism in any forum, it’s much better to receive it on your home turf where you aren’t under the pressure of the spotlight. If the friendship indeed came first, I would take her feedback as valuable. Although it’s possible she feels threatened by your new role, it’s more likely that this is a person with an inside scoop who genuinely wants to assist you. However, if you became close while working together at the same company, you may want to ask yourself if this person really qualifies as a real friend â€" someone you trust implicitly with your well-being. You can assess this through questions like: “When I see this person at church, could we make conversation for 10 minutes without mentioning work?” and “Do I regularly hang out with this person one on one, and have I met her significant other or family?â €If you answer no to these questions, I’d be careful about taking her scrutiny too much to heart. Maybe her motives are pure, but maybe they aren’t. Until your position becomes permanent, don’t spend a lot of time with her or confide in her too much â€" either personally or professionally. Ask for feedback from others on the team so her input is balanced by other perspectives.

How to Grow, Attract and Retain Talent in 2016

How to Grow, Attract and Retain Talent in 2016 Our friends at INSEAD  have released the 2015-2016 edition of its annual Global Talent Competitiveness Index (GTCI). The study  was produced in collaboration with the Human Capital Leadership Institute of Singapore (HCLI) and Adecco Group. Movement of talent and economic prosperity This years theme of Talent Attraction and International Mobility focuses on findings linked to the significant correlation between movement of talent and economic prosperity. Mobility is vital to fill skill gaps; and a high proportion of innovative, entrepreneurial people were born or studied abroad. It is hence not surprising that top ranking countries have positioned themselves as desirable destinations for high-skilled workers. Faced with new types of migration flows, decision makers need to shape policies and strategies to address both the immediate concerns of their constituencies and the longer-term interests of their citizens. What countries rank best? The top three countries ranked on talent competitiveness are Switzerland at number one, followed by Singapore and Luxembourg in second and third places, respectively, remaining the same as in 2014. Countries ranked in the top 10 clearly demonstrated openness in terms of talent mobility close to 25% of the respective populations of Switzerland and Luxembourg were born abroad; the proportion is even 43% in Singapore. The proportion is also significant in the United States (4), Canada (9), New Zealand (11), Austria (15), and Ireland (16). There has been little change in the top 20 since the release of the last edition of the GTCI report, with the exception of Czech Republic (20) entering this group, New Zealand improving its performance significantly, while Canada and Ireland saw modest declines. Specific themes around mobility Through analyses and comparisons of the scores registered by individual countries, a number of patterns and similarities emerge, converging towards eight key messages relating to this years theme: Mobility has become a key ingredient of talent development: creative talent cannot be fully developed if international mobility and brain circulation are not encouraged. The migration debate needs to move from emotions to solutions: countries will find it advantageous to address movements of people through a talent perspective. Management practices make a difference in attracting talent: apart from monetary incentives and standard of living, another important differentiator in talent attraction is the professionalism of management and investment in employee development. Jobs and people move While people continue to move to jobs and opportunities, jobs are now moving to where the talent is: some countries have started to attract the attention of international investors because of creative talent at a reasonable cost: China, South Korea, Philippines and Vietnam in the Asia Pacific region; Malta, Slovenia, Cyprus and Moldova in the European region; Turkey, Jordan and Tunisia in the MENA region; and Panama in Central America. Talent magnets are emerging New talent magnets are emerging: While the US, Singapore and Switzerland have long been attractive to talent, competition may become fierce among emerging talent hubs such as Indonesia, Jordan, Chile, South Korea, Rwanda and Azerbaijan, as more aspire to join these increasingly attractive destinations. Robots  and algorithms move in Low-skilled workers continue to be replaced by robots, while knowledge workers are displaced by algorithms: as mobility continues to be redefined in new ways, notably through technology, knowledge workers are affected and this shift signals that entire sectors of activity may be displaced. Some people may have to work virtually for different employers from their homes, while others have to retrain and move far to obtain jobs. Talent circulation is the new normal In a world of talent circulation, cities and regions are becoming critical players in the competition for global talent: agility and branding of cities seem to be more critical differentiators than size as an increasing number of large cities adopt imaginative policies to attract global talent. Lack of vocational skills in emerging markets Scarce vocational skills continue to handicap emerging countries: gaps in vocational skills continue to exist in emerging countries such as China, India, and South Africa, and particularly in Brazil where talent capabilities show signs of weakening on all fronts. This is also true for some high-income countries such as Ireland, Belgium and Spain. This years GTCI country coverage has improved, allowing the report to cover 109 countries (versus 93 countries in 2014), representing 83.8 percent of the worlds population and 96.2 percent of the worlds GDP.

Maybe there will be a recession. Heres what to do just in case

Maybe there will be a recession. Heres what to do just in case The debate continues about whether and when a recession is coming, and what the markers would be. Most of us are in no position to do the analysis ourselves, but you dont need to be an economist to know that if people are talking about recession, you should do some thinking about what you would do if one occurs. As a gen-Xer, I am a master of recessionary times: I graduated into one of the worst job markets since the depression and then lived through the dot-com bust. But since were not actually in bad times right now, the question really is, what do you do in a job you have if you want to get ready for a downswing in the economy? Here are four ways to prepare for a job market that might turn sour: 1. Specialize People think that if there are fewer jobs, a wide range of skills makes someone more employable. Its not the case, though. In a tight job market, employers can hold out for the perfect fit. And if you are not clearly defined as a specialist, then you are not going to be a perfect fit for anything. Researchers have found that you get the most benefits from specializing after you have three to five years of experience under your belt. So dont specialize too early because you wont have learned enough about what you want. But if you have a few years of experience, and you see layoffs looming, try to get on some focused, short-term projects that will allow you to market yourself as a specialist in something when you have to get your next job. 2. Do something great right now Most people have been participants in the last decade of manic job hopping. Which means most people have followed a pattern of performing well at a company, writing those achievements on their resume, and then making the next hop. This works in a job market where you can control when you leave. But if you get laid off before you accomplish something significant, you will end up with a dark spot on your resume a place where you did not do anything particularly notable. So do something now, fast, that you will be able to quantify as an achievement on your resume as in completed X project in X percent less time than anticipated, or saved X dollars by working twice as fast as normal. 3. Consider graduate school Theres a reason why so many Generation Xers went to graduate school: There were no jobs in the early 90s. In a down job market, grad school is a way to enhance your skills when there are no available jobs that will do that. One of the most popular choices is law school because a law firm provides a clear path (and an A in organic chemistry is not a pre-requisite). I have never been a fan of law school as a fall-back plan, because 44% of practicing lawyers recommend that you do not go into the field. That said, law firms have become much more accepting of peoples personal lives since the last recession. Many law firms have retooled how they operate to give people more time to have a life outside work, and they have changed their policies to accommodate different stages of life. Grad school is a treacherous route, though: Be careful about spending money for a degree with no career path to follow it. But also, be careful of investing in a career path you wouldnt want to follow. (Hat tip: Elise) 4. Focus on the quality of work and quality of mentoring The hardest thing to do in a bad job market is to keep your learning curve high. If the market goes sour, instead of focusing on the perfect industry or the perfect company, focus on developing new skills. And then refocus your career into a more suitable industry or location when the job market gets better. By cultivating a great mentor in your current job, you can make your job a spot where you can wait out an economic slump should one come. So instead of focusing on the negative predictions of economic doom, focus on the positive conversations that build a solid mentoring relationship, and you will weather the storm better because you wont weather it alone.

How to Get a Job in Hospitality with No Experience

How to Get a Job in Hospitality with No Experience Typically, it is easier to find work in a field that you have experience in. However, what happens if you don’t have any relevant experience in a field that you want to work in? Let’s take a look at what you need to do if you want to get a hospitality job despite your lack of a resume.Photo Credit- Pixabay.comHow to Get a Job in HospitalityevalIf you are looking for career opportunities in hospitality industry, it may be a good idea to start by getting a college degree or other relevant certifications. Employers love workers who have a formal education because they tend to have an understanding of how the industry works today and how to leverage that understanding to increase the company’s bottom line.In addition to a college degree, in some country you may need to have certifications such as RMLV certificate, a mandatory course in Queensland,Australia â€" which must be completed by the licensee or an applicant for an Approved Managers Licence for a licensed premise or course l ike RSA refresher training to ensure you are aware of their obligations and that in-house training particularly in reference to RSA.evalIn most cases, you can either get this training on the job or at some point after you have been hired but before your first shift. It may be a good idea for business owners in the hospitality field to undergo this training to help them relate to their workers.1. Job Opportunities in Hospitality Are PlentifulThere are plenty of job opportunities for those who are looking for part-time work, a full-time job or a full-time job that may lead to a career. As there are relatively high levels of turnover in restaurants, bars and hotels, there are almost always positions available for those who meet the legal requirements to hold a job.As a hospitality worker, you will need to show a willingness to learn and a willingness to offer quality customer service. For the most part, this means smiling when addressing customers and talking to them in a courteous and respectful manner. The goal is to treat them well and make them enjoy their experience. If you can do that, you should have no trouble getting getting entry level work.2. Connections Can Help You Find WorkIf you lack experience or any type of formal education, you may be able to get a job based on who you know. For instance, if you know someone who owns a restaurant or stays at a hotel in town, that person may be willing to hire you or put in a good word that may lead to getting a job.It is important that you don’t embarrass anyone who does vouch for you or give you an opportunity in the industry. Therefore, make it a point to show up on time, do everything that is asked of you and do everything possible to represent the company in a positive well wherever you go.3. Showcase Relevant Skills That Could Translate WellIn some cases, it may be a good idea to show that you have skills that could translate well in the hospitality industry. For instance, you may want to mention any previ ous customer service jobs that you have held or the fact that you once ran your own company. This may indicate that you have the skills necessary to be successful as a bartender, a hotel front desk employee or a waitress at a restaurant.evalIf you are going to highlight previous jobs when applying for a hospitality position, make sure that those jobs were in the recent past. Showing a job gap may cause an employer to ask questions that may actually hurt you in your quest to find work.4. Stay Determined In Your Search for WorkThere is a chance that your application could be denied or thrown away without ever receiving an interview. However, this is not necessarily an indication that you should give up.Instead, try to get feedback from the employers that you applied to in an effort to learn why you weren’t chosen for a job and what you can do to get better. This may help you either refine your pitch to employers or help you understand what skills you may need to eventually land your first hospitality job. While it can be tough to find work without experience, it is not impossible to do so. This is especially true in the hospitality field where many workers are college students or others who are hired on a part-time or seasonal basis. However you choose to find work, make sure that you prominently showcase your skills and personality to ensure that employers know how well you can do if given the chance.

Dont Let Technology Hurt Your Productivity

Dont Let Technology Hurt Your Productivity Image Source Whether you’re a business owner working with a dozen employees or you’re a solopreneur working from home, we all rely on technology every single day in an effort to be more productive. We use different digital tools to automate certain business processes, we communicate via digital channels with our clients as well as our colleagues, and we strive to use a range of project management software solutions to make sure we’re on top of all of our tasks and deadlines. In the rush to find the latest tech product that promises to boost productivity, many businesses fail to notice that some of these decisions can actually hinder their performance. It all depends on how you implement these solutions, and how you train yourself as well as your employees to use them. While every business and every person has unique needs and preferences, there are certain tech-based commonalities that can jeopardize our productivity. Here are a few to keep in mind, alongside solutions that will help you solve and prevent productivity issues in the future. Digital distractions As soon as your phone alerts you of a new text message or an email, your brain responds even if you choose to ignore the notification. Alas, it’s too late for your brain, since the distraction has already prevented your mind from seamlessly directing its attention towards the task at hand. To be more precise, it can take as much as 23 minutes to restore your focus after a digital distraction. Although communication depends on digital tools, reducing your number of active notifications and alerts can make a tremendous impact on your productivity. Screen your calls, mute your social media, and schedule communication slots such as email correspondence so that you can truly focus on the task at hand. Equipment malfunctions One of the main perks of using tech in the workplace is to save time on menial tasks, automate a range of different processes, and simplify communication to reduce delays. All in all, it’s all about greater efficacy. Businesses also rely on tech to create and provide entire services, from customer support, web development, to content creation and graphic design. If your key people end up with a computer that’s on a rampage or a security threat, you have to deal with the issue immediately to save time and reduce your losses. One of the simplest ways to stay on top of your tech needs is to allow an experienced IT provider such as Computer Emergency to keep an eye on your systems, spot any issues and resolve them in time, and protect your data with advanced security measures. Letting someone who’s an expert in the field handle your equipment can prevent unwanted emergency situations and protect your productivity every day. Security risks A business can only be productive when work is done in a safe and secure environment, including its digital realm. Most, if not all businesses today rely on their internet connection to communicate during the day, to complete projects, and to answer customer queries. Remove the internet connection, and you suddenly have an office in chaos. However, that very same internet connection provides an opportunity for hackers to penetrate your network and wreak havoc on your systems and steal your data. Such security breaches are more than enough to rob you of hours of productive work since you need to work on mitigating the problem immediately. Smart devices are only as smart as the people who use them, so make sure that your employees are well-versed in the latest cybersecurity preventative measures that will help them make smarter decisions when using the internet and their tech. This is a pivotal issue for any business today, and it will not only save your reputation, but also your day-to-day business efficacy. The oversaturation of tech at work Sitting at your office desk means that you’re surrounded by various seemingly helpful items such as your laptop, your tablet, your smartphone, and perhaps a slew of other gadgets that promise streamlined work. Alas, research has shown that even the presence of your smartphone can decrease your cognitive capacity, since the object’s vicinity is enough to cause you to be distracted, anticipate notifications, calls, messages, and regularly glance at it from your workstation. Although it’s not productive to ban phones altogether, either, you can start by reducing the number of tech tools you have at your disposal. Perhaps it’s time to put away your phone into your jacket or your drawer. Maybe your tablet won’t be necessary until it’s time for a pitch or a presentation, so you can stick to your laptop only. This will help you avoid that brain-drain and sustain your focus in order to be productive during your work hours. Yes, the emergence of different digital and tech-based solutions has enabled us to grow new business ideas and develop our careers immeasurably. However, there are certain pitfalls of technology that too many driven professionals fail to notice in time, and it can cost them their productivity and their reputation down the line. Use these pointers to keep an eye on your own behaviors with technology, so that you can build a more beneficial relationship with all of your tools and preserve your productivity in the process.
